In a home with four children, everything from weekday meals to holidays becomes a lot bigger. When the client expanded their too-small kitchen and dining space with a kitchen addition, Divine helped bring the family’s style into focus a beautiful, useful layout that left no detail untended. Reflecting a love of French country style, the finishes and countertops marry the softer aspects of European design. From deep cherry cabinets with double crown moldings, to the custom center island featuring curved corbels and imported granite, each selection evokes a sense of warmth. Small details, such as the oiled bronze chandeliers, give the space even more romantic appeal. Providing a backdrop to the heart of the home, a grand fieldstone fireplace welcomes guests.
Details make all the difference when bringing personal style to a remodel. Small touches in the selection of finishes and décor of this kitchen bring everything together. The layout of the kitchen afforded a large, walk-in pantry for extra storage. Rather than match the door to the custom cabinetry, the designer opted for a touch of whimsy with a frosted glass door, inscribed with “Pantry” in a playful scrolling font for a bit of Parisian flair. To give the kitchen space a timeless feel, a statement piece of custom cabinetry was incorporated into the design. The distressing and glazing effect gives the feeling of a family heirloom, while giving the client a place to display crockery and house a small speaker system to enjoy music while cooking or entertaining.
The design team used custom drapery and upholstery to unite the design between the kitchen and dining areas. The dining space takes advantage of outdoor beauty with floor-to-ceiling custom windows to let in ample natural light. The arched ceiling is reflected in other aspects of the design as well; the arched kitchen windows, and arch panel design found in the custom cabinetry create subtle notes throughout the space.
Perhaps the most intimate feature of the kitchen, the large custom mural set over the cooktop recalls warm memories of the clients’ time in Europe. Created from the client’s personal photos, the custom-commissioned mural is a representation of a view over the French countryside. The custom mural is given a prominent placement in the kitchen, and further highlighted by its niche inset, accented with mother of pearl tile to accentuate the color palette and tie the piece to the rest of the design. The romance of the piece pairs well with the custom carved range hood enclosing the cooking area.
Even in a large kitchen, using the available space to create ample storage and display solutions is essential, including open kitchen shelving. Once a large integrated refrigerator and double oven system was in place, the Divine team had a little extra room to create interest in the otherwise utility-focused section of the kitchen. Open kitchen shelving with drawers makes a great addition, adding beautiful display options to tuck away favorite pieces, while providing access to necessary items such as towels and mitts in the drawers underneath.
"I wanted to send a note thanking you for all the work you did on both my new kitchen and bath. Both rooms came out so much better than Rob and I could have ever imagined."
