Bathroom Design Trends for 2017 and Beyond

Like every other room in the house, when it comes to remodeling a bathroom, it seems like there is an ever-evolving list of trends to keep up with. So what's new in the world of bathroom design? Here are some trends we've spotted that we think will be big in 2017 and beyond.

Penny tile.

Like subway tile, penny tile is inexpensive and has roots in commercial applications. Its small scale creates a graphic effect when paired with contrasting grout, giving floors and walls an almost polka-dot appearance.

Statement showers.

Forget au natural. One of the other biggest tile crazes of the moment swaps out on-trend marble for patterned mosaic tile that gives the shower an almost wallpapered look and turns the shower into a design focal point of the room.

Open shelving.

Taking a cue from the major kitchen design trend that's emerged over the last few years, open-style shelving is becoming a popular option in the bathroom, too. Rustic-style shelves above the toilet or sink are becoming more common in lieu of closed storage like handing cabinets and even large vanities.

The small-scale of bathrooms relative to most other rooms in the house make them excellent candidates for bold design choices like wallpaper. Whether it's done on an accent wall or as an allover pattern, wallpaper is one of the biggest request we get lately from our bathroom remodeling clients.

Brass fixtures.

Until a few years ago, homeowners were eager to rip out brass bathroom fixtures, which were an instant reminder of the late eighties and early nineties. But like all trends, this one has made a comeback. Brass bathroom hardware, from light fixtures, to faucets, to showerheads, is once again a coveted design element.

Wood-look tile.

Hardwoods aren't a practical option for wet spaces like bathrooms, but more and more homeowners are opting to get the warm, inviting look hardwoods create with wood-look floor tile instead.

Frameless Shower Doors.

Clear glass, frameless shower doors have been a trend for a few years now, but it's one that will only continue to grow as more and more homeowners opt for separate bathtubs and shower stalls and desire spaces that feel airy and spa-like.
